For those of us who are lucky enough to live in Sheffield we know how great this city is, but for those outside of Sheffield thinking of a move here it is a well kept secret. If you’re contemplating a move to Sheffield then keep reading as here we shout about the lifestyle and culture the city has to offer.
We spoke to specialist on all things Sheffield Tracy Bush, from Relocate2Sheffield, to get her take on what makes our city so great, and why it’s the place to be when looking to strike the ultimate work-life balance.
What would you say is Sheffield’s best kept secret?
A third of the city actually lies inside the Peak District National Park – wow, talk about best of both worlds! Within six miles of the city centre you can access the national park which is perhaps why Sheffield is known as ‘The Outdoor City’.
What do you think stands Sheffield apart from other cities?
Which other city can you live in a fantastic leafy suburb, just minutes from either the city centre or the Peak District National Park? You really have the best of both worlds; you can choose between a vibrant cultural scene famous for the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker, or enjoy the great outdoors with stunning landscapes made for climbing, hiking, running or mountain biking. I find it’s the easy access to the great outdoors which is a huge draw for people looking to relocate here.
Do you find candidates are surprised by the lifestyle offering in Sheffield?
Sheffield is a friendly and safe city that has a vibrant feel, with numerous parks and woodlands that are easily accessible. There is a fantastic independent scene of shops, cafes and restaurants, not only in the city centre but suburbs too. I regularly discover new places and I am amazed by the unique offering; take a look at my Instagram page to view local hot spots.
The best part of my job is showing people around the city, the beautiful suburbs and the stunning surrounding countryside – they are always blown away by the amazing quality of life on offer here.
I’ve worked with hundreds of people relocating to the city over the past 10 years. Many of those thought they would be here for a couple of years, but are still here – they all tell me the same reasons, that Sheffield is a friendly, safe city that offers a great work-life balance.
This and the fact we have such a high retention of students from our two leading Universities speaks volumes.
How does Sheffield compare in terms of living costs?
There are some great affordable areas of Sheffield and cost of living is said to be up to 25% less than London. We are also so lucky to have some incredible state and private schools making Sheffield a great destination for families.
In three words or less what’s your favourite thing about Sheffield?
‘The green view’ – if you would give me more than three words…the trees, parks, woodlands and access to the Peak District National Park. The friendliness of the people who live here also makes it feel like a village. Not forgetting the vibrant independent scene and all our fantastic restaurants!
