Let’s talk about ‘Game-Face’. In today’s fast-paced working world, many of us have perfected the art of putting on our game-face.
We show up to work, we deliver for our clients, perhaps we lead a team, and we keep moving forward, even when we might not be feeling our best.
It’s part of being professional, right? But the truth is, constantly wearing that game-face very often comes at a cost.
For those of us working in people-facing or high-performance environments, the pressure to always appear composed and capable is enormous.
How many times have you pushed through tiredness? Or added a good dose of self-doubt and stress into the mix. Let’s face it, we don’t want to let anyone down.
Underneath it all, our emotions build, and our anxiety rises. Over time, we start to feel stressed, we lose our confidence, and no longer recognise the best version of ourselves.
We burnout.
Burnout Is Not Failure
Too often, burnout is something we try to hide or power through. This is something I resonate with enormously, having spent months last year feeling the effects of burnout myself. It was rough, and I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
At the time, I didn’t want anyone to know that I wasn’t OK. However, I have since realised that acknowledging it isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s actually quite the opposite. It’s one of the most important steps toward positive change.
Creating Change That Lasts
At Benchmark, we’ve seen firsthand how important mental health and well-being are to performance at work. Recruitment for me has never just been supporting people to find a role, but helping them to sustain success once they have found their perfect role.
This is one of the main factors why I founded Benchmark Pathways this year. My career has always been dedicated to coaching and supporting businesses and individuals in a solution-focused way. Nothing makes me happier than supporting somebody from burnout to balance. Helping people to build their confidence, their motivation, and clarity of where they need to be.
You might think that putting on your game face will get you through the day, but taking it off is what helps you truly thrive.
